Dental implants are artificial tooth root replacements that provide a foundation to place fixed or removable dental prosthetics. They act as the replacement for the patient's tooth roots and help restore the functionality of the teeth by permanently replacing them.
The implant is a metal post made from titanium and is surgically placed into the patient's jawbone to replace the missing root. The implant provides support for crowns, bridges, or dentures.
Dental implants are recommended for patients wanting to replace one or several missing teeth. However, the patient should have good dental health and sufficient jawbone density to qualify for a dental implant.
Before deciding on their patient’s candidacy, our Spanish Fork, Utah dentist also examines the patient's mouth to ensure that they do not have periodontal disease.
Evaluation: Our Spanish Fork, Utah dentist evaluates the patient's oral cavity and overall oral health and formulates a treatment plan accordingly. If the patient has some dental conditions like a damaged tooth or periodontal disease, the damaged tooth is removed and the dental issues are addressed first.
Placing the implant: After administering anesthesia to the patient, an incision is made in the jaw to insert the titanium post into the jawbone. It takes approximately 12 weeks for the dental implant to fuse with the jawbone and be able to hold the artificial tooth.
Placing the abutment: Once the implant has fused with the jawbone, the dentist places an abutment over the implant to hold the artificial tooth. Once the abutment is placed, the gums are allowed some time to heal.
Placing the prosthetic tooth: After the gum has fully healed, an artificial tooth or other prosthetic is placed on top of the abutment to complete the process.
